Supply chain issues & demand inflation

Due to global supply chain issues, deliveries for new equipment, like cranes, have been delayed, driving strong demand for late model used assets.

At Ritchie Bros. we sell hundreds of cranes each year across our various auctions and marketplaces. In 2021 we sold more than 1,400 cranes, with approximately 39% of those being rough terrain units.

In November 2021 we held a huge crane event in Decatur, AL for Sparks Industrial, selling 38 cranes via online auction in about an hour, including unused 2020 and 2021 Grove all-terrain units. The unreserved auction attracted 3,100+ bidders from 35 countries, with approximately 92% of the assets selling to buyers outside the state of Alabama.

According to Rouse Services, which tracks equipment prices across the industry, the Auction Value Index for cranes is up approximately 9% year over year. In an excerpt from Rouse’s quarterly crane commentary for Q4 2021, issued last week, “the crane industry has continued to improve relative to earlier in the pandemic, used crane prices have held up well, and the Sparks auction in Q4 showed strong performance.”
